So I’ve made it pretty obvious on here that I’m not too fond !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and I plan on replacing it by November. I was planning on waiting it out until next March, but it turns out it’ll be cheaper to get rid of it sooner, rather than later (CO registration fee will be $500+ next January since it’s a new car). I want to start shopping now so I know exactly what I want once the time comes.

The Criteria:
- Under 100K Miles
- Under $26,000
- Not American (don’t feel like going into detail about this one)
- At least a V6
- Needs a sunroof
- I may be the only one saying this, but it doesn’t need to be terribly reliable or cheap to maintain..I’d rather have something fun
- Preferably AWD but I can do RWD
- I prefer a manual but I may consider a good auto this time around

The Top Prospects:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Let me know what else you guys would consider...I’m really digging the German with the heart of an Italian (cough cough S6)

Instead of a Volvo S60 sedan, how about something with a little more internal volume. The V60 would be even better for your roof rack and ski/board holder.

Only good thing is that you wont take a huge hit on your wrangler! Of all cars to change your mind on, thats a good one.

Honestly, I know you loved your S60R. Why not look into another Volvo. They have the best CPO warranty around (7 year 100k mile) that will cover everything. Im sure you can find a T5 AWD or maybe even a T6 in your price. We are a volvo family and they might have us a bit biased but I love them so much. They seem like the safest (intended pun) and best value on the used market.

Those S6s are insane, you NEED an aftermarket warranty though.

It’s just me, but I would go for the Jaaaaaaaaaaag.

I have pretty much developed a “I will never spend another goddam cent of my money buying another one of these blasted things” view for anything VW or Audi. This is based on the fact that my B5 S4 in essence immolated itself while parked.

It looks like you like Audis. You have a Jeep. This is the perfect middle ground. It hits all your boxes and more. V6 BiTurbo with a 6 speed or with the auto, you can have a V8. Not bad on the road and excellent in the snow and offroad.

Kinja'd!!!

it will

I can agree on both points here. Especially the crappiness of a new Jeep.

My father has one. My mother and I both hate it. She and I will not ride with him because we despise the ride, the lack of space, and the fact that even my 3/4 ton Dieselrado beats the Jeep on every comfort mark.

And the Chevy? Well let’s just say that Oppo knows it has a quarter of a zillion miles already.

Perfect! How about a W220 (2003-2006) Mercedes S600. Easy to find with under 100,000 miles for way under $26,000. You could save the rest for the repairs that will come with time. Sunroof as standard and it also has a bi-turbo V12, so it is hilariously fast. I bought mine last June and paid $17,000 for mine.

Is around your price range, can come with a warranty and can do everything the Wrangler can do (fight me) with the added comfort of duel climate control and leather seats. It’s not a manual HOWEVER, I think the supercharged V8 with 390 ponies makes up for that a little.

An E60 M5 fits your requirements and they've dropped into your budget. Not saying you should get one, but that’s what I ended up with when I went through the same exercise. Look for a manual that has already had the rod bearings replaced and preferably coil packs and vanos system too.

A5/S5 is a good option. I was torn between S5 and CTS-V before I decided to go with an older project car. Also, 540i is cheap and fun and RWD.

Weren’t the allroads like the least reliable Audi ever made? I haven’t looked it up, just been told that and have had a few friends that went straight to a Honda after owning an allroad. I realize this is anecdotal and not data, so I’m genuinely curious.

Hondas break down too....

I think theres just a lot that can go wrong with them and they are not easy to fix. I havnt had to call a tow truck yet and they can take a hit (if you saw my post last week)

I paid 3k for mine, I’ve put about 1500 into it (including new tires)

there is still stuff to be done but I also ride around in heated leather seats (front and rear), sunroof, power everything, adjustable air ride suspension, and one of the better AWD systems out there

The Jeep’s been pretty reliable for having 4k on it...aside from a rattle in the door right now. I came from a Volvo S60R which was a bit of a handful before it.

I actually like the last option...I think I read somewhere the E55 is a better choice than the E63. I’ll look more into it.

Engine, transmission, and performance tuning-wise the 55 probably is better. The engine and trans are pretty much the last version of tried and true older tech and don’t have any major failure points unless you count people not servicing them or occasional valve cover gasket leaks.

The E63 has a better engine in stock form and the 7 speed transmission which performs better than the 5sp in the 55 but may not be as reliable. Exhaust sounds better. Interior quality seems incrementally better to me. Lots of other parts have been updated and are more reliable. The early years of this engine (M156) have some inherent issues, such as cam and lifter wear, weak head bolts, and less commonly noisy cam adjusters. These usually present themselves somewhere between 50-100k. Parts are expensive.

Both cars will have top of the line audio systems for their time, but you’re more likely to get bluetooth on the 63.

Anything else you might be curious about?

Maybe rethink the Audi S6 V10. My friend has one, and it’s a bit of a nightmare, even for a VAG product. He goes through control arms like some people go through wiper blades, they’re notorious for performance-choking carbon build-up in the engines, and worst of all, there is NO aftermarket support. You can’t even get a cold air intake for it. That engine is sort of close to the one in the R8/Gallardo, but it isn’t the same in a lot of ways, so parts made for those cars don’t really transfer over.

And that’s just the stuff specific to THIS Audi - you still have all the electrical and regular maintenance nightmares to contend with. It’s a super cool car, but just not worth it.

P.S. - I’m also in Denver, as is my friend. We both get our cars serviced by Hardey’s Motorwerks in Parker. Maybe talk to him or another VAG specialist before getting yourself into a quagmire.

Cool. I’ll take it easier on them. My next thing will be AWD, I think. I used to work at an independent German auto repair shop, and I had a tough time working on Audis, everything seemed non-intuitive to me. I was just a kid though, and now with one garage I do less wrenching these days, so maybe I’ll give Audi another chance. Thanks for opening my eyes to a personal brand bias I need to reexamine.
